Music
Music is an outward expression of the creative joy in our hearts. Regent children are exposed to great classical music, studying the works and lives of two great composers each year. Children at Regent worship their Lord with song, “But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God; yea, let them exceedingly rejoice. Sing unto God, sing praises to His name” (Psalm 68:3-4). As students study significant classical selections, it is hoped that they will develop a lifelong appreciation for the great hymns and music of the ages.
"Be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." Ephesians 5:18-19
God has graciously given us the gift of music and has ordained that we worship Him with singing and instruments. Regent places great value in giving students a rich music education. We strive to teach music skills that will last a lifetime, deepen students' understanding and appreciation of great music, provide opportunities for making beautiful music together, and inspire them with a passion for excellence to the glory of God.
Regent music teachers are specialists in their fields, offering a diversity of developmentally-appropriate group instruction in general music, singing/choir, band, and jazz band.
All students have multiple opportunities to perform each year. Lower School students participate in grade-level showcases on Special Days in the spring, as well as at Grandparents' Day in the fall. Upper School students perform both on and off campus on multiple occasions, including participation in OSSAA District ratings competitions where Regent ensembles and soloists have often earned Superior ratings. In recent years, several Regent high school students earned the honor of being selected through the rigorous audition process for an All-State Band or Choir.
Drama
Noah Webster, in his 1828 dictionary defined drama as the following: “A poem or composition representing a picture of human life, and accommodated to action. The principal species of the drama are tragedy and comedy.”
Drama presents a slice of human life in action. It is an art form that gives enjoyment and presents truth. In keeping with our overall philosophy about creativity, Regent focuses on those themes which are true, honest, just, pure, and of good report.
In Poetics, Aristotle writes that drama must include these six elements: plot, character, thought, diction, music, and spectacle. Regent’s drama department brings all this to the stage as they combine literature, music, art, and dance in productions. The overarching goal of the drama program is to encourage young actors to communicate the meaning of quality literature while gaining confidence. The program seeks to train and support students while they work as a team to tell a story.
